January has never been considered the best month of year. It’s cold, grey, miserable and everybody is poor from Christmas. Ok, so we have no money to shop or go out but we can turn this horrible month into a positive month. It is our planning month. We can plan exciting things for the year ahead, new promises, new challenges and dare I say it…new you. I loathe to use that phrase but I am seeing an increasing number of clients that have got stuck in a rut with the relationship they have with their wardrobe. It is my job this month and for the rest of the year to take some of that pain away. Every month I will post tips on where to buy the ‘best ofs’, how to wear them and how to make them last! Start loving your wardrobe, get excited about it and look forward to wearing your fabulous clothes. Stay tuned in and send me your feedback, would love to hear from you.
This January we start with ..
5 BASIC THINGS YOU NEED IN YOUR WARDROBE
I am all about the basic staples, I have scoured the shops and road tested them and the best thing is they are trans-seasonal. Start wearing 100% of your wardrobe. So what is the perfect basic?
- It is a linchpin to your wardrobe, it brings outfits together
- it lasts and it’s easy to care for
- it goes with everything
1 – A GOOD PAIR OF JEANS
I have now lost count of the amount of clients who are wearing the wrong size trousers – typically 2 sizes too big! Golden rule is the majority of jeans stretch so go down a size. No more pants on show, baggy bums or stretched out knees.
My top pair is French Connection’s Rebound skinny jeans and at £69 they are a great price. They are thicker than your average skinny jeans which means they will bag less, they will hold you in, and they are high waisted which means they tuck you in where it matters.
2 – A LEATHER JACKET
There is a leather jacket out there for everyone. Leather is great for smartening up a casual outfit, fab for making a girly outfit edgy and it also always makes an outfit more interesting. It is rare to find a good fake leather jacket so it is worth investing in real leather. To make it last you years avoid going for a style that is this seasons trend. Go for one that suits YOU, it will last you for years.
3 – A GOOD QUALITY T-SHIRT
Whether it is plain white, printed or breton, a good t-shirt that is looked after is so versatile.
Here is a cute French Connection slogan breton, a basic white scoop neck Tee from & Other Stories (I have it in every colour!) and a higher neck line basic tee from Uniqlo, which comes in loads of colours and its quality and cheap!
4 – A STATEMENT SHOE OR BOOT
If you are a heels girl then go for a printed pair or bright colour. If your wardrobe lacks in colour a pop of colour on your feet is a fun way to make a statement. A closed toe will take you through all the seasons, even better if they work with black tights. Prefer flats? Then what about a great pair of sneakers. My clients will vouch for my love of them. Every woman needs a pair of smart sneakers, it makes your busy day running around much easier.
5 – ACCESSORIES
They make an outfit. A simple necklace can transform an otherwise boring outfit. A crew neck top or jumper can look plain, add a long simple structured necklace from Oasis to draw the eye down and create interest. A low cut becomes more interesting with a shorter necklace, again from Oasis. A simple piece that picks up the light and reflects off the face can do wonders for the skin on your face. A printed belt, like this fab leopard print belt from Warehouse, draws attention to the waist and finished off an outfit making you look styled.
Here are some of the outfit combos I have pulled together!
